BJM – Les Ballets Jazz de Montréal
Major player on the international dance landscape, BJM – Les Ballets Jazz de Montréal has been constantly growing with all the vitality and open-mindedness characterising this company since its creation in 1972.
BJM’s evolution has been especially shaped by a few key artistic directors. Its founder Geneviève Salbaing, animated by a visceral love of dance, has led the BJM with passion and determination for over 20 years. Louis Robitaille, as soon as he was named Artistic Director in 1998, reoriented the company towards audiences open to new choreographic forms. In June 2021, Alexandra Damiani takes over the artistic direction of BJM to further develop the company’s mission and its major projects. She can trust a team of dancers of international level, who embody the vitality and artistic openness of the company since its origins.
Pieces available for touring
Under the new artistic direction of Alexandra Damiani, Les Ballets Jazz de Montréal will add a new multidisciplinary piece to their repertoire in November 2021: VANISHING MÉLODIES – Music by Patrick Watson. The choreographies will be signed by Brazilian Juliano Nunes and Quebecer Anne Plamondon. Éric Jean, who previously worked as dramaturge and stage director on Dance Me – music by Leonard Cohen, will direct and stage this new production.
The 2021-2022 season will also be marked by the company’s 50th anniversary. To celebrate this event, a wide range of activities have been thought up to pay tribute to the company’s roots, but also to its evolution over time, vibrating to the rhythm of society, until becoming the one we enjoy today.
